SCHOLARSHIPS

The Live Oak County Area Go-Texan, Inc. (LOCAGT) held its annual Scholarship Awards Banquet at The Barn at Katzfey Ranch on May 6. Proud parents, educators and community supporters enjoyed a delicious steak dinner while more than $48,000 in scholarships was awarded to seniors from George West and Three Rivers High Schools.
The LOCAGT Committee raised funds for the scholarships through generous community donations and various fundraisers, including the December dinner and dance. Each student received a $3,000 scholarship. From 1997 to 2024, the organization has awarded a total of $1,168,500 in scholarships to Live Oak County youth.
Academic scholarship recipients included Jaymee Carrillo, Adam Duran, Jason Galey, Elizabeth Grimaldo, Taten Kopplin, Rhett Mauer, Alexa Munoz, Brooke Pullin, Ella Ruiz, Erica Salazar and Destiny Welburn. Scholarships for technical institutions were awarded to Teagan Collins, Grant Dragon, Talan Masters, Samuel O’Neil, Kylie Shaw and Davian Zuniga.
Later this month one of the students will receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR). From 1957 to 2024, the HLSR has awarded $709,000 in scholarships to Live Oak County youth.
In addition to the scholarships, Virginia Horton was recognized for creating a quilt that received a blue ribbon and was selected for a national tour of quilt shows. Each year, Horton creates a quilt representing the county to be displayed at the HLSR. Her quilt, "Irish Mist," was chosen for the tour, which concludes with a display at the International Quilt Show in Houston.
Members of the Go-Texan Committee were recognized, including County Chairperson Stacy Wallace, David Ainsworth Jr., Charlie Bradshaw, Scot Deason, “Tito” Hoskins, Sammie Huff Kohlman, David Huser, Rick McClelland, Cullen Moore, Jarret Pawlik, Alice Perez, Brett Wallace, Donna Wallace, Poncho Wallace, Allyn Weber, Cheryl Wheeler and Michael Wright, as well as Assistant District Vice-Chairman Ben Huser and Area Go-Texan Coordinator Stephanie Huser.
The LOCAGT’s next major fundraiser will be held on Dec. 6, with a dinner and dance featuring Jake Hooker and the Outsiders at the Live Oak County Coliseum.
